Tummy time can feel intimidating for many parents—especially when babies fuss or seem unsure about being on their bellies. The good news is that tummy time doesn’t have to be long, stressful, or perfectly executed to be effective. With a few simple adjustments, it can become a natural, enjoyable part of your baby’s day.

Tummy time helps babies build the strength they need in their neck, shoulders, arms, and core. These muscles are essential for future milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. Beyond physical skills, tummy time also supports visual development, coordination, and early exploration of the world.

One of the biggest keys to success is starting small and often. Short tummy time sessions spread throughout the day are far more effective (and manageable) than trying to force one long session. Even one to two minutes at a time counts, especially for young babies. As your baby gets stronger, those minutes naturally add up.

Making tummy time fun can make all the difference. Try getting down on the floor face-to-face with your baby so they can see you, hear your voice, and feel encouraged. Singing, talking, making silly faces, or using a favorite toy can help distract from discomfort and turn tummy time into a positive experience.

You can also change up the position to make tummy time easier. Placing your baby on your chest while you recline, using a rolled towel under their chest, or practicing tummy time on different safe surfaces can all help your baby feel more supported. These variations still provide the same developmental benefits while offering comfort and variety.

Remember, every baby is different. Some babies love tummy time right away, while others need more gradual exposure. Fussing doesn’t mean failure—it simply means your baby is working hard. With patience, consistency, and encouragement, tummy time becomes easier, more enjoyable, and even something babies begin to seek out on their own.

At Tiny Steps Daycare LLC, tummy time is woven naturally into each baby’s day in gentle, playful ways that meet them where they are. By keeping movement joyful and pressure-free, we help little ones build strong foundations.
